Two years ago, in an article "The transition from Columbus Day to Indian Resistance Day ...," I wrote: "This big lie, this hoax ... about the 'discovery' of America by Christopher Columbus, still infects the minds of millions in Latin America. Columbus was not among the first to know that the earth was round ... the ancient Mediterranean peoples already had this knowledge. He did not 'discover' America! Already centuries before, the Africans had fleets that crossed the Atlantic and they had a vivid, healthy, trans-cultural intercourse with the American indigenous peoples. Their artifacts and traces of their ancient cultures can be found all over Central America."

Ecuador will have presidential elections next month October 15, and election results can stimulate important political changes within the country and a significant effect in the region. According to the latest surveys, the two main candidates are, the leftist Rafael Correa (33%), and Social Democrat Leon Roldós (22%), most likely to continue on into a second round of voting. Electoral norms dictate that a winner gain over 40% of the electorate votes in addition to having a 10% lead over the next closest rival. Correa is presently close to reaching that goal.

De acuerdo a las normas electorales, puede ser declarado ganador quien obtenga más del 40% de los votos, y un 10% de diferencia de su rival más cercano, y Correa está muy cerca de lograr esa meta.

Why do the streets need swap boxes? What is art and who defines it? In these times of increased fear and privatization I wonder what the public sphere even means anymore. If the notion of public space as something we can all collectively define is to die, it will be because we as a people have put our heads down and forgot about that world outside ourselves.

US hostility, threats and sanctions are the very engines that have propelled the development of nuclear weapons. It's quite obvious and apparently Washington's 'long war' message: if you as a state or people want to survive, you better get nuclear bombs.

Le 27 septembre dernier, la compagnie Gildan annonçait la fermeture de son usine de Salaberry-de-Valleyfield, en Montérégie, et d'une de ses deux usines toujours en opération à Montréal. Parallèlement, elle décrétait d'importantes réductions d'effectifs dans le secteur de la chaussette à Mount Airy, en Caroline du Nord, et à Hillsville, dans l'État de la Virginie.
