Speaking truth to power: a first-hand account from the Quebec City uprising

vieuxcmaq, Jueves, Mayo 3, 2001 - 11:00

Arthur Sankey (artsankey@hotmail.com)

"Surely you have some sense of honor! Of duty! Have the courage to do what is right! have the courage to disobey orders!" I shouted.

Around this point the head cop, who was doing all of the gassing while the others stood like statues, came over and pointed his grenade launcher at my my face from 3 or so feet away. I laughed in disbelief.I had not seen them what I saw later - a police officer, presumably the same one, shot a canister directly into a protestors face from the same distance. His face was covered with pure power and I assume must have been bruised or broken...

this, shot sunday morning 4.22.01 at 1:30 am, is an example of the type of physical dialogue that transpired between quebec police and demonstrators who refused to allow the perimeter to be extended. It is important to realize that the space being shown in this video was occupied by and within the extended perimeter of the police just a few hours earlier.

Québec City, Saturday April 21st - I'm told I'm "under arrest", for no other reason - I guess - than having been filming arrests of demonstrators by riot squads, opposite le Grand Théâtre, just outside the fence (the Perimeter), after another police attempt to take over René-Lévesque Blvd only a few blocks away from le Centre des Congrès where Summit leaders were meeting.

Breaking the Barricades: The Battle Against the Free Trade Area of the Americas in Quebec City

vieuxcmaq, Domingo, Abril 29, 2001 - 11:00

Scott Harris (betweenthelines@snet.net)

While the heads of state met with their corporate allies to move toward implementation of the FTAA by 2005, activists outside this 400-year-old walled city staged militant protests condemning the secrecy of the negotiations and the erosion of democracy they claim is the result of surrendering government power to transnational corp.

Reclaim the Government

vieuxcmaq, Domingo, Abril 29, 2001 - 11:00

David Barnaby (david999111@hotmail.com)

Reclaim the Streets is great, increasingly successful and says a lot. A horizontal move might be to Reclaim the Government. After all, the government is ours in theory - and should be ours in practice. It has been bought by corporations, but it's our right to own it and control it. We should take it back.
