As a strike wave sweeps the country, the Maoist leadership agrees to banning strikes.

Since the Maoists emerged in the April 2008 Nepal elections as the largest party (though without an absolute majority) to lead the new coalition government, they have failed to heal existing divisions - in their own party, within the parliamentary political system and its ruling class - or within the intermingled social, caste and ethnic tensions across the wider society. In fact, all these divides have widened. And since November a strike wave has spread across the country.

We are a group of teachers and employees at Quebec colleges and universities who stand in solidarity with the Palestinian people, and with the people of Gaza who have suffered through the Israeli siege as targets of Israel’s brutal military attack. It will take more than ceasefires to bring a just and lasting peace in Palestine and Israel. We are acting in response to an appeal for support issued January 2, 2009 by the Palestinian Federation of Unions of University Professors and Employees. In the wake of the Israeli bombing of the Islamic University of Gaza, the Federation of Unions has urged academics around the world to support a boycott of Israeli academic institutions.

Nous, enseignant(e)s et d’employé(e)s des universités québécoises, nous nous déclarons solidaires du peuple palestinien, et du peuple de Gaza. Ces peuples ont déjà subi une attaque militaire de la part d’Israël ainsi qu’un état de siege israélien. Nous voudrions souligner que sous ces conditions un cesse-feu ne suffira pas pour réaliser la paix entre Palestine et Israël. Nous réagissons donc à un appel lancé le 2 janvier 2009 par la Fédération palestinienne des syndicats de professeur(e)s et d’employé(e)s universitaires. À la suite du bombardement de l’Université islamique de Gaza par Israël, la Fédération des syndicats a demandé aux universitaires du monde entire d’appuyer le boycottage des institutions académiques israéliennes.

13 January 2008: Carrying a giant eviction order and a mock padlock, the broad anti-war group, Stop the War Coalition-Philippines, went to the Israeli embassy today to symbolically order its closure.

The only solution in Israeli-Palestinian conflict is a “no state” solution i.e. a totally different world in which private property is abolished along with standing armies and national frontiers. As Marx said “workers have no country” but we do “have a world to win”. Increasingly we have a world to save and only the global working class united beyond trades, religious, ethnic and national boundaries can do it. Now that is worth fighting for.
