Le 6 juin dernier, deux militants de mouvements sociaux basques, Eduardo Plagaro Perez de Arriluzea, 29 ans et Gorka Perea Salazar, 27 ans ont été arrêtés et incarcérés, suite à une demande d’extradition émise par l’Espagne. À partir d’accusations basées sur des déclarations obtenues sous la torture, ils ont été condamnés à sept et six ans de prison pour délits d’incendie criminel. Ils sont arrivés à Montréal fin juillet 1997 et se sont rapportés le 8 août de cette même année, afin de revendiquer leur statut de réfugiés politiques. Aucune condition de mise en liberté n’a été imposée aux requérants par la Commission de l’immigration et du statut de réfugié. L’Espagne a émis sa demande d’extradition pour bloquer la possibilité de l’exercice du droit d’asile. Depuis quatre ans, Eduardo et Gorka vivaient au Québec et, comme tous bons citoyens, ils travaillaient et adhéraient au système canadien tel qu’il se présente actuellement.
