Accueil chaud au G-20 de Paul Martin

vieuxcmaq, Lundi, Octobre 23, 2000 - 11:00

G20 Activities planned for Montreal

vieuxcmaq, Mercredi, Octobre 18, 2000 - 11:00

Chad lubelsky (chad@alternatives.ca)

October 24 and 25 Montreal dubiously hosts the Group of 20 (G-20) meeting at the Sheraton Hotel (Rene-Levesque West and Stanley). The G-20 is comprised of the finance ministers and bank governors of the G-7 nations, as well as other countries defined as "emerging markets." Importantly, the G-20 is also made up of the heads of the International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the
World Bank. These men (and they ARE all practically men) are some of the most powerful proponents of capitalist-style globalization in the world.

Forum Highlights Implications of Services Agreement in the WTO

vieuxcmaq, Mardi, Octobre 17, 2000 - 11:00

James Aaron (aaronj@interchange.ubc.ca)

A little known, but sweeping new trade agreement, the WTO General Agreement
on Trade in Services (GATS) is the latest threat to the public sector and
the ability of governments to regulate in the public interest. Details of
this new trade deal were presented at a recent forum held in Vancouver on
September 21, organized by Trading Strategies, a coalition of unions and
civil society groups.

Updates on Situation in Bolivia

vieuxcmaq, Mardi, Octobre 17, 2000 - 11:00

Jim Schultz (info@democracyctr.org)

Under pressure from the World Bank, last year Bolivia privatized the water
system of Cochabamba, the countries third largest city. The government
sold the city's water to Agua del Tunari, a subsidiary of the California based Bechtel Corp. In January the company increased the water rates by as much
as 400 percent. In a country where the minimum wage is $100 per month many
families saw their monthly water bill soar past $20.

People of Cochabamba rebelled. A coalition of labor, human rights, and
community activists under the leadership of "La Coordinadora'', brought
the
city to a halt. They refused to back down despite the government's
declaration of a "state of siege" and the sending in of troops. After
months of protests the Bolivian government was forced to nullify the
contract.

Crise mondiale du pétrole, sauf à La Presse

vieuxcmaq, Dimanche, Octobre 15, 2000 - 11:00

Globalisation: a society of aliens?

vieuxcmaq, Jeudi, Octobre 12, 2000 - 11:00

AIJAZ AHMAD (ceras@alternatives.ca)

'GLOBALISATION' is only a word, in some key respects a misleading word. We could simply say 'Empire'. That might even be more accurate. Perhaps 'American Empire'. Perhaps even more exact - but in other ways again somewhat misleading! Because what we actu ally have is, finally, for the first time in history, a globalised empire of capital itself, in all its nakedness, in which the United States imperium plays the dominant role, financially, militarily, institutionally, ideologically. We shall continue to use the word 'globalisation', however, because it is more familiar and serves the purpose. But we shall have to explain what it means and how it came about.

Reflections on S26: What did we gain?

vieuxcmaq, Jeudi, Octobre 12, 2000 - 11:00

Peter Olson (peter_o_222@hotmail.com)

Typical of the sensationalist big business press, the official coverage [on s26] focused obsessively on the activities of small handfuls of property destructors who acted outside of and against the spirit of the organized demonstration. But for our part, as partisans of the emerging movement against capitalist globalization, it is important that we reject these false characterizations of the media and claim S26 as a victory, a step forward for our movement.

Break with Conformity

vieuxcmaq, Mardi, Octobre 10, 2000 - 11:00

Michel Lambert, Chad Lubelsky (chad@alternatives.ca)

From April 20 to 22, 2001, Quebec City will host the third Summit of the Heads of State of the Americas. The summit will principally deal with the creation of the Free Trade Area of the Americas, and needs to be viewed within this context. Clearly the failure of the launching of the Millennium Round in Seattle left a gigantic vacuum in the process of rapidly establishing a global liberalised world. The stakes in Quebec City are even higher!

Which do you love most, your party or your country? Canadian Health Care in Crisis

THE RECENT GROWTH of obstacles to getting health care here in the United States has led to a renewed interest in Canada's system of universal access, called Medicare. (See note 1) Premium inflation has accelerated after stabilizing in the mid-1990s.
