The slogan of the USSF was 'Another world is possible, another U.S. is necessary.' It was interpreted both as another U.S. and another 'us,' meaning the left has to reinvent itself.

After spending five weeks in Bolivia this summer, I was convinced that the new paths out of this destructive, hateful morass we call neo-liberalism would come from those most marginalized by its greed and violence. Little did I imagine that one of the strongest signs of this direction would come from the belly of the beast itself.

Il n'y a pas qu'ici, au Québec, où les pressions se font plus insistantes pour obtenir un augmentation beaucoup plus importante du salaire minimum. C'est également le cas chez nos voisins du Sud, aux États-Unis, où les syndicats et de larges coalitions populaires demandent maintenant que le salaire minimum passe à un minimum de 9,50$ l'heure d'ici 2011 et qu'il soit par la suite indexé automatiquement au coût de la vie. Un projet de loi, allant dans ce sens, vient d'être déposé au Congrès par le sénateur Edward Kennedy; il vise à faire écho à cette campagne. Le salaire minimum est présentement de 5,15$ l'heure aux États-Unis et n'a pas été changé par le Congrès américain depuis 11 ans.

Selon OXFAM, 70% des Irakiens n'auraient plus un accès adéquat à l'eau potable et 28% des enfants vivraient un problème sérieux de malnutrition. La situation n'a jamais été aussi pire en Irak que depuis le début de l'intervention américaine.
