The week-long Solidarity Across Borders march to Ottawa started this afternoon as several hundred marchers and their supporters met up in downtown Montreal. The participants will be on their way towards Canada's capital city after walking through all of the island of Montreal tonight and tomorrow, in an attempt to bring attention to the plight of refugees in Canada. The group's demands are posted here.

Despite the less than perfect weather conditions, the marchers have now (6 PM) reached the Parc Ex neighbourhood and are headed for Kent Park, Côte-des-Neiges, where a street party will take place tonight.

A second audio capsule by PatC, reporting straight from the Solidariy Across Borders march to Ottawa.
The marchers are now in Montreal's Parc Ex neighbourhood, having made their way north across the Plateau district. They are resting there momentarily before heading for Kent Park in Côte-des-Neiges, where a massive street party will take place tonight.

La marche Solidarité Sans Frontières vers Ottawa vient de s'enclencher cet après-midi. Les marcheurs et leurs supporteurs se sont réunis au Parc Cabot pour ensuite traverser le centre-ville de Montréal d'ouest en est en clamant haut et fort leurs revendications.

La première journée de marche est terminée. Les participants reprendront leur chemin dimanche matin à 9h à partir du métro Snowdon.

En 2003, une loi a généralisé le recours aux techniques biométriques pour renforcer les procédures de vérification des identités des ressortissants étrangers lors de la délivrance des visas et lors du contrôle aux frontières. Au plan européen, des initiatives ont été prises pour introduire la biométrie dans les visas, les titres de séjour et les passeports. Annoncé mi-avril 2005 par le ministre de l'Intérieur, Dominique de Villepin (pas encore 1er ministre), la France veut se doter d'une carte d'identité électronique obligatoire et payante, en 2007.

 
In a bid to denounce Canada's poor treatment of immigrants and refugees, the Solidarity Across Borders coalition is organizing a march from Montreal to Ottawa, from June 18th to the 25th. Aiming to bring the public's attention to the situation of refugees and immigrants in the country, the coalition has made the following 4 demands:

1. The regularization of all non-status persons ;
2. An end to deportations ;
3. An end to the detention of migrants, immigrants and refugees ;
4. The abolition of security certificates.

Some 200,000 people now live and work in Canada without any legal status.

On Saturday, June 18th, the march will depart from Cabot square (Atwater Metro), heading for Côte-des-Neiges. The first day of the march will come to a close with a neighbourhood street party in Kent Park (Côte-des-Neiges). The event will feature Nomadic Massive, Syncop, and Muzion. The adventure will continue in truth when the marchers hit the road the next day, heading for Ottawa.

Teaser? Well, I can't think of a fitting one for the moment, being in rush mode. But, I guess, one could be "what about law & morality, [real] spirit; why's it so extremely absent, as is the case in our world of [imperialistic] immorality? Empire can work, but [most] people presently in temporal power certainly are not leaders".

Plusieurs événements qui se sont produits au cours des derniers jours sont venus mettre en lumière, une fois de plus, le durcissement impitoyable des politiques de l'État canadien en matière d'immigration. L'État canadien cherche à montrer qu'il peut être aussi "efficace", voire encore plus, que son voisin états-unien, dans la lutte pour assurer la "sécurité" du système de domination impérialiste.

La MARCHE SUR OTTAWA - PERSONNE N'EST ILLÉGAL débutera dans moins de trois semaines ! La marche, organisée par la coalition Solidarité sans frontières de Montréal, commencera le samedi 18 juin, se poursuivra de Montréal jusqu'à Ottawa (plus de 200 kilomètres !) et arrivera à
destination le 25 juin.

Les quatre revendications principales de Solidarité sans frontières sont : La régularisation de toutes les personnes sans-statut; La fin des déportations; La fin des détentions des immigrant(e)s et réfugié(e)s; L'abolition des certificats de sécurité. Solidarité sans frontières est une campagne basée à Montréal, qui a été lancée par plusieurs groupes actifs dans la défense des droits des migrant(e)s, immigrant(e)s et réfugié(e)s. La majorité des groupes qui composent Solidarité sans frontières sont des comités autonomes de personnes directement affectées par les lois et réglementations répressives anti-immigrants et « anti-terroristes ».

Several hundred people came out into the streets of downtown Montreal on Friday, responding to the callout issued by the Coalition Against the Deportation Against Palestinian Refugees, the Montreal wing of the International Solidarity Movement (ISM) and Solidarity for Palestinian Human Rights (SPHR).
