Here is an excerpt of the photo-reportage of the "No One Is Illegal" march that happened last sunday in the streets of Montreal, beginning the anti-WTO mobilization that will continue up to wednesday.

Montreal- The World Trade Organisation's mini-ministerial meetng will unfold at Montreal's Sheraton Centre from July 28th to 30th.This meeting brings together the finance ministers from 25 countries plus the Europeen Union. Supachai Panitchpakdi, director-general of the WTO is also expected to be present.

One of the main objectives of the Montreal mini-ministerial is consensus-building among what is in fact is a minority of its members before their ministerial meeting in Cancun, Mexico, September 10-14, 2003.

On the agenda: the privatisation of services through the General Agreement on Trade in Services, the protection of corporate privaledges such as Chapter 11 of NAFTAA, access to public markets, investment, and political leverage.

Weeks after Pierre Pettigrew's declaration that the "anti-glibalisation" movement has "completely dissapeared," the Popular Mobilisation Against the WTO is organising 5 days of creative resistance, popular education, and direct action with the goal of disturbing the WTO meetings in Montreal.

CMAQ, Montreal Indymedia, and many volunteers have set up an Independent Media Centre that will be open throughout the days of action.

Each day during the mobilisation, IMC Quebec will produce a "News Poster" that will be put up all over downtown Montreal to inform citizens as to the week's developments and details about the protests. In the first edition, IMC activists covered the Teach In that was held at UQAM on July 26th.

À la veille d'une rencontre importante de l'Organisation Mondiale du Commerce (OMC) à Montréal, nous marchons ensemble aujourd'hui pour montrer clairement notre opposition à l'OMC et à ses plans de dépossession et de déplacement forcé de populations entières. Cette manifestation représente plus de quatre-vingts groupes, et encore plus d'individus, qui déclarent
publiquement et fièrement leur solidarité avec les mouvements pour l'auto-détermination, la justice et la dignité, ici et partout dans le monde. Nous marchons également pour envoyer un message d'appui et de solidarité à nos frères et soeurs en Amérique Latine, qui se rassembleront
en septembre pour s'opposer à l'OMC à Cancun, au Mexique.

La guerre : un outil de répression capitaliste

Pour Raymond Legault de la coalition Échec à la guerre qui a organisé les grandes manifestations de l'hiver et du printemps dernier contre la guerre en Irak menée par les États-Unis et ses alliés, la différence entre la dictature et la démocratie, c'est que dans la première on te dit de te fermer la gueule et dans la seconde, on te dit que tu peux toujours causer. La preuve, les manifestations n'ont pas empêché la guerre. Le militant participait à l'atelier "guerre et mondialisation" à l'UQAM, hier. L'Irak c'est le pétrole et les pétrolières subventionnent l'OMC. Et c'est l'OMC qui pousse les gouvernements à accroître leurs dépenses militaires. Pour imposer "la démocratie" en Irak, les États-Unis dépensent 4 miliards de dollars par mois. Une façon d'améliorer le produit intérieur brut du pays. Ce qui a déjà fait dire à un dirigeant de Lockheed Martin, première productrice d'armement aux États-Unis, que "lorsque je vois l'étoile du logo de notre compagnie, je vois l'une de celles du drapeau américain".

For Raymond Legault from the coalition, Échec à la guerre ("Failure in the war") who organized the large manifestations in the winter and the spring against the war on Iraq threatened by the U.S. and its allies, the difference between a dictatership and democracy is that in the first one they tell you to shut up and in the second one they tell you to keep talking. The proof is that the demonstrations didn`t stop the war.
The activist participated in the workshop "War and Globalization" at UQAM, yesterday. It is Iraq`s oil that subsidizes the WTO. And it is the WTO that urges governments to increase their military expenditures. To impose "democracy" in Iraq, the United States military is spending about four billion dollars a month on the war, an unacceptable way of improving the gross domestic product of the country. A director of Lockheed Martin (the largest arms producer in the U.S.) said that when he sees the stars in his company`s logo, he sees them as stars of the American flag.

Travaille, au lieu de manifester ! Et, que reprochez-vous à l’OMC ? C’est bon pour les affaires, non ?

L’Organisation mondiale du commerce négocie sous le prétexte de la « liberté économique » et aboutit aux résultats suivants :

Les politiques du libre-échange déracinent des millions de peuples indigènes partout dans le monde ;
- Les corporation peuvent par ailleurs profiter des pays où les conditions de travail ressemblent à celles de la Révolution industrielle;

- En favorisant la « culture » des organismes modifiés génétiquement et en imposant des droits sur les semences (ce qui est identique à une appropriation de la ferme familiale), la biodiversité sera éliminée ;
- Ceux et celles qui seront les plus touchés par les négociations seront réduits au silence.

Si on retire le mode de vie de quelqu’un et si on étouffe sa voix, on retire ses droits civils. Or, comme les droits civils préservent la dignité de soi, l’ultime résultat : la déshumanisation.

Vous trouverez ceux et celles qui manifestent contre ces négociations et les négociations semblables à Seattle et à Rome ; à Genève et à Montréal (en passant par Evian). Leur voix collective est une présence humaine qui n’est pas inaperçue.
