CAIRO, Jan 9, 2011 (IPS) - At least three Algerians have died and hundreds have been injured in four days of protests over housing shortages, rising food prices and failing economic policies that only three months ago won praise by the International Monetary Fund and other Western financial institutions.

The protests in Algeria come as similar demonstrations continue unabated in the neighbouring North African nation Tunisia, also hailed previously as an economic success story by Western banks and investors.

At least four Tunisians have died during the ongoing protests against the poor economic performance of Western-backed autocratic ruler President Zine el Abidine Ben Ali.

The protests in both Arab countries were initially ignored by the Western media and Western governments but as the protests escalated Washington began to take note.

A Middle East advisor to former U.S. president George W. Bush and leading neo-conservative Elliott Abrams said on his blog at the Council on Foreign Relations that Tunisia was an "unimportant" country, but expressed concern that the fallout from the demonstrations could be dangerous for other Arab nations.

Summary : On January 11, 2011, organizations including the Center for Constitutional Rights, Amnesty International USA, and Witness Against Torture met in front of the White House to rally against the Obama administration's reluctance to close down the detention facilities at Guantanamo Bay.

Frida Berrigan, organizer, WITNESS AGAINST TORTURE declared : Today, tragically, 173 men remain at the prison that President Barack Obama promised to empty by last January.

"The subpoena, issued December 14, covers all official Twitter accounts of WikiLeaks, as well as the personal accounts of Brigitta Jonsdottir, a member of the Icelandic parliament, and WikiLeaks collaborators Rop Gonggrijp and Jacob Appelbaum. The order also requests all information on Pfc. Bradley Manning―who the US government claims leaked information through WikiLeaks―and WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange.

The government is demanding that Twitter hand over mailing addresses and billing information, IP addresses used to access Twitter, as well as bank records and credit card information.
The subpoena provoked an uproar in Iceland, where the foreign minister summoned the US ambassador for an explanation. “[It is] very serious that a foreign state, the United States, demands such personal information of an Icelandic person, an elected official,” said Interior Minister Ogmundur Jonasson in a press interview with the Icelandic National Broadcasting Service.

This concern is heightened, Jonasson said, when “put [in] perspective and concerns freedom of speech and people's freedom in general.”

L’incapacité du président Barack Obama à obtenir l’arrêt de la colonisation en Cisjordanie et à Jérusalem illustre la partialité de Washington.  Elle confirme l’absence de détermination sérieuse des Etats-Unis à imposer la paix sur le front israélo-palestinien.  Le risque est grand alors de voir cette « non-paix » se transformer en conflit ouvert, la seule incertitude tenant au lieu de la prochaine guerre : Gaza, le Liban ou l’Iran ?

Depuis la crise du système financier en 2008, plus rien ne semble pouvoir camoufler la profondeur de la crise historique que traverse le capitalisme. Alors que les attaques contre la classe ouvrière pleuvent, que la misère se répand, les tensions impérialistes s'aiguisent, la faim continue de frapper plusieurs centaines de millions de personnes, les catastrophes naturelles se font toujours plus meurtrières. La bourgeoisie elle-même ne peut nier l'ampleur des difficultés ni dessiner l'horizon chimérique d'un avenir meilleur sous sa domination. C’est ainsi que, jusque dans ses organes de propagande, elle concède que la crise actuelle est la plus grave qu’ait connu le capitalisme depuis celle des années 1930, que le développement de la misère est un mal avec lequel il nous faudra «apprendre à vivre». Mais la bourgeoisie est une classe disposant de nombreuses capacités d'adaptation : s'il lui faut admettre, un peu contrainte par l'évidence de la situation, beaucoup par calcul politique, que les choses vont mal et qu’elles ne sont pas prêtes de s’améliorer, elle sait, dans le même temps, présenter les problèmes de manière suffisamment fallacieuse pour épargner le système capitaliste comme un tout.
