The economic crisis gripping Europe and government austerity measures have triggered angry demonstrations in major cities across the continent, including Athens, Paris and London. More recently, young activists in Spain poured into the streets, and taking inspiration from the popular revolts in the Middle East and North Africa, have occupied Madrid’s Puerta del Sol Square. There, Spaniards from all walks of life have gathered in unexpectedly large numbers to protest an economic and political system they say has given them no hope for the future. Activists in the Square, who call themselves “Indignados,” or the outraged, have organized themselves into a small city run by democratic councils. Police attempts to forcibly remove the demonstrators only swelled their numbers.

The March 11 Japanese earthquake and tsunami that killed 14,700 people and left an estimated 11,000 missing also destroyed the Fukushima nuclear power plant complex in the north of the country. On April 21, the Japanese government evacuated residents living within a 20-kilometer radius of the disabled nuclear complex -- and barred them from returning to their homes due to increased levels of radiation.

C'est ainsi que le 29 avril dernier, nous sommes venus faire résonner les textes de nos anciens, pour rafraîchir les mémoires, pour donner du baume au coeur, pour partager le pain de l'amitié.

Devant un public réduit mais tellement motivé, nous avons tenté de rendre hommage à nos Pères, nos Mères, nos Frères et soeurs de La Commune mais aussi de donner courage à celles et ceux qui, aujourd'hui, en dignes héritier-e-s, continuent d'animer la flamme de la révolte et de la fraternité.

Soon after the Deepwater Horizon oil spill disaster, the Obama administration’s Interior Department imposed a moratorium on deepwater drilling, but under pressure from the oil industry and their conservative political allies, the moratorium was lifted in October 2010.

After weeks of enormous demonstrations in Wisconsin, Ohio, Indiana as well as other states, people from all walks of life challenged Republican governors attempting to weaken workers' rights. Union activists protested across the country on April 4 in what they called “We Are One” rallies. Over 1,000 protests, teach-ins and other events marked the day 43 years ago when Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. was assassinated in Memphis, Tenn. The civil rights leader was in Memphis to support the city’s unionized sanitation workers who were on strike for fair wages and treatment.

As the crisis at Japan's Fukushima Daiichi nuclear plant complex entered its third week, there were growing concerns about soil samples collected near the plant that revealed the presence of small amounts of plutonium. All nuclear power plants produce small amounts of plutonium within protected uranium fuel rods, but Fukushima’s Unit number 3 reactor uses a mix of uranium and plutonium or ”Mox,” fuel. The soil tests could indicate that there may be a dangerous breach of the Number Three reactor’s containment vessel. Plutonium, with a half-life of more than 24,000 years, is one of the most dangerous substances known on earth. When it enters the body through the air, in drinking water or in food, Plutonium can damage DNA and cause cancers. Story continues

Protests against other authoritarian governments soon spread to Yemen, Lebanon, Jordan and the Arab world's most populous nation, Egypt.
