Next Monday (November 5), Jonathan Aspireault-Massé and Jaggi Singh were due to go to trial before a jury at Montreal's Palais de Justice.
They are charged with "participation in a riot" as a result of the demonstrations against the G-20 meetings in Montreal last October 2000. They have plead "not guilty" and are eager to get to trial.
Today, during pre-trial motions, the trial was postponed, and will not take place until at least January 2002, and perhaps later in the spring. The Crown is insisting that the identities of police infiltrators continue to be concealed for "national security reasons." The matter has to go to Federal Court, which has jurisdiction in the case, and has resulted in the postponement of the trial.
As well, Montreal police agents continue to insist that they have no intelligence or undercover files on Jaggi, despite the earlier testimony of a Sergeant-Detective at a bail hearing. The Crown had initially implied that there weren't any police infilitrators.
However, a pre-trial witness testified that she personally saw at least three individuals who were in communication with plainclothes police agents. The revelation prompted the Crown to put forward a motion today to hide the identity of the police infilitrators. One reason provided in a police affidavit was that the very same agents will be attending the G20 meetings in Ottawa later this month.
Jonathan and Jaggi would like to thank everyone who has offered their support and solidarity to date, and would like to encourage people to stay in touch about the trial. Also, there are 20 other defendants, along with Jonathan and Jaggi, who still face charges relating to the G20 in Municipal Court. A trial date, before a judge, has yet to be set, but there will be a "pro forma" date later this month.
