Montreal Action Against War, Racism and Imperialism (AGIR) came together in the immediate aftermath of the September 11th events in the United States. In the current political and social context, AGIR believes it is more important than ever to encourage and maintain a public, assertive and coordinated presence against the racist, militarist and imperialist policies of Western governments.

Howl festival is an annual event dedicated to organizing and reinforcing social movements and anti-capitalist mobilizations through the arts. Howl 2001 will run in three cities in the months of September and October 2001. The festival is running in partnership with a variety of arts and activist groups from around North America. We encourage people to come and participate, to get involved, in the fight against capitalism.

Spoken Word Performances

Catherine Kidd: Catherine Kidd is an unforgettable voice. A fine writer / performer originally from Vancouver, she settled in Montreal after traveling in India. Her prose is as focused as poetry, and her sophisticated understanding of theater makes for a riveting show. She performers piece in collaboration with Jack Beets, Montreal based DJ. Look for her upcoming book this spring.

Ian Ferrier: is one of the core poet / performer in the North American spoken word and performance poetry scene. His current focus is performing his work-often with jazz accompaniment - and presenting the works of other poet, both English and French, n radio and CD. His most recent works appear on Exploding Head Man, the new CD from Planete rebelle press and Wired on Words.

Jason Selman: is a Montreal writer, performer and musician. His words have a had a long standing impact of the Montreal scene, Selman is known for his delicate but powerful verse. With a solid musical orientation, Selman roots his work in the struggles of humanity.

Nah-ee-lah: is a Montreal based writer and performer she writes as a means to express what she often can not seem to find the words for verbally. She has performed her work in Toronto, Montreal and New York. Her first solo cd project is nah-ee-lah: poetry? to be released in 2001 by yah ga yah productions. She also appears on two independent cds - When the love is not enough, released in 2000 by Spirit of 3 and Wordlife; tales of the underground griot released in 1998 by Reword.

AN FTAA SOUND MONTAGE
BRINGING TOGETHER THE SOUNDS OF QUEBEC & SONG

This performance will feature a variety of Montreal musicians - four projects in fact - working and reworking the sound from the street of Quebec city last April 2001. The project will include DJ¹s, Clarinet, Guitars, Vocals and Double Bass. With a wide variety of styles and musical outlooks this event should be a mix not often experienced.

WITH CONSTELLATION RECORDING ARTISTS HANGED UP

hanged up is a montreal-based duo featuring gen heistek (pest 5000, sackville) on viola and eric craven (shortwave, sackville) on drums and percussion. the pair of musicians have known each other for some time and came together in 1999 to begin working on this project, which anchors gen's locomotive string work to eric's kinetic drumming. a minimalist pop sensibility prevails in the stripped-down melodicism of the string playing, reminiscent of similarly folk-inspired modern music by the likes tony conrad and arnold dreyblatt.

TVAC The Toronto Video Activist Collective

The Toronto Video Activist Collective will screen their OCAP
fund-raiser, OCAP Strikes Back. This film which deals with the history of OCAP, their daily struggles and direct actions. The Toronto Video Activist Collective is a group of video activist who are committed to telling the real story behind movements like OCAP, stories which are often manipulated and warped by the mainstream media.

Seth Tobocman:
Seth Tobocman's approach to dealing with the fucked up things in life is creating the activist comix magazine World War 3 Illustrated and starting a community of expression. Communities are an important thing to Tobocman, and his stories are full of examples of the benefits of organizing and working together to smash oppressive structures. His work has been seen throughout the world and his activist work far exceeds the boundaries of a comic page.

Kaie Kellough:
Kaie Kellough resides in Montreal. He has lived in Vancouver and
Calgary. His poetry and fiction have (recently) appeared in Filling Station, Free Fall, Ash, Kola. His reviews have appeared in Matrix, articles in Broken Pencil and NuBeing. Kaie is currently guest/ contributing editor of the African American Review. Kaie is a superb spoken word performer and an occasional event promoter. He recently launched Fire Escapes, a chapbook of poetry.
