Over 50 people arrested at Rue de Fleurie

Until the early hours of the morning, teenagers engaged in direct street ``compact`` with military police officers on Cote D`Abraham and St. Vallier. This was followed by an explosion at around 4:00 am this morning and a police raid at Rue de Fleurie. This has been a ``Safe-Haven`` for many of the demonstrators, citizens, volunteers and activists gathered in Quebec City. The place have been run by the Winnipeg Free Soup Kitchen through out the duration of the People`s Summit and the Summit of the Americas. It has hosted hundered of people, providing free meals, food and beverages to everyone that needed to eat or drink, with the only condition of following the Kitchen`s Rules. They also had mobile kitchenettes at different locations through out the city, including St. Jean Babtist during the Carnival against capitalism on April 20th, 2001 and again on Rene Levesque during the direct actions. Their bottles of water have saved hundered for people from the risk of eye injury and dehydration as a result of the tear gas used by the military police against the demonstrators.

Until 4:00 am this morning, Rue Le Fleurie was crowded with over 200 people gathered around a bone fire, dancing and chanting at the sounds of the clacking metal. The crowd was peaceful and quite removed from any action taking place at the security perimeters; a ``rave`` in progress.

At around 9:00 am, the space was evacuated, the kitchen dismatled, all personal material confiscated or thrown into a garbage truck. This included, clothes, bicycles, cans, pots and food, paintining or anything that was simply found within the peripheries. Two people were hancuffed and taken into custody and another was detained in a police car and then released few minutes later. These arrests were the last of over 100 arrests that took place over the last two days. This includes the arrest of vounteers, activists and CMAQ journalists hauled away by the military police in a van. As to who was arrested and where they have been detained, no one knows. The police refuses to answer any questions, asking everyone at the scene to move to the side while they continued their ``clean-up`` of the place.
