Just to remind people of the conditions that Latin American migrants face daily. Just a reminder to those who are travelling in the upcoming days to protest the FTAA in Quebec City. I haven't seen much mention of the conditions which Latin American and Carribean peoples face when attempting to travel, emigrate, or even flee within this hemisphere. Many of you who will be trying to cross the border/ demonstrate in Canada will be taking risks that you do not take everyday. But truth be told, people from Latin America who want to visit their families, vacation, or study here in the US and Canada are most often refused. Additionally, there are thousands of people whose living conditions, for political or economic reasons, are so inhumane and unbearable, that they travel north to any number of other countries, to make it to a place where they may find a better job, or safety from political repression. These migrants often face unsurmountable odds, encountering crime, violence from authorities, and sometimes even illness or death as a result of their travels. I would hope that, considering the repercusions of the FTAA on the lives of people both north and south, those of you who will be on the streets of Quebec, Burlington, San Francisco, Tijuana, or wherever, will keep in mind that the risks that we face during these days of protest are faced by thousands of people all over the world every day due to our 'civilization' of the globe. So, be safe, take care of each other, and don't forget, that after we tear it down, there will be much creating, and building to be done. Let's start now, why wait? |
