Callout for critical articles, and artwork, and general submissions on the FTAA for the Peak Anti-Globalization Special Issue.

The Anti-Globalization Peak Special Issue

CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

The Summit of the Americas in Quebec City is fast approaching. Inside there will be talk of the global economy and the implementation of the proposed Free Trade Area of the Americas... outside there will be resistance to the exploitation of people and the plunder of the environment that the deal represents. As both a celebration of the anti-globalization movement and a contribution to it, the Peak is planning a special issue in conjunction with the Guelph Action Network. We need your contributions!

The Guelph Action Network (GAN) aims to mobilize a diverse range of people in campaigns for social, economic and environmental justice. The Peak is the University of Guelph's autonomous, democratic, volunteer-run alternative magazine.

Content
The types of issues we hope to cover:
- information on trade agreements (past, present or proposed)
- current world struggles with trade
- how globalization and trade affect the environment, economics, human and animal rights, agriculture, workers rights, etc.
- reports on protests of anti-globalization issues (including their effectiveness, effects on local communities, corporate and independent media, police repression, immigration and border issues, etc.)
- skills and training information for protests and mass organizing
- problems and challenges within the anti-globalization movement (anti-oppression, debates on tactics, etc.)
- alternatives to globalization

Our goal is to include as broad a range of topics and perspectives as possible. We especially want this special issue to give space to voices which tend to be marginalized within society in general as well as within the anti-globalization movement itself.

Feel free to contact us to find out what has already been submitted and where content is lacking -- this will help to ensure that content is diverse and that we don't have lots of people all writing about the same thing.

Format
We are looking for anything and everything: personal experience, analysis, artwork, cool flyers youUve come across, stream-of-consciousness, interviews, photos, academic and journalistic pieces, poetry, how to guides, humour, cartoons, etc.

We welcome written submissions in French, English and Spanish. There is no set word limit, but keep in mind that the more concise your piece is the more pieces we can publish (we don't expect the issue to be more than 40 pages long). Let us know if you have anything in mind for layout, for example if you already have a graphic in mind to go with your article or if you think your submission would make a good cover.

Deadline for Submissions
We intend to have the issue ready for distribution on April 7th, in time for the Summit of the Americas April 20th to 22nd. To allow enough time for production, the deadline for submissions is March 20th. Make sure you include some way for us to get in touch with you.

Submissions, questions and comments can be emailed to p...@uoguelph.ca with SPECIAL ISSUE in the subject line. Our mailing address is the peak, student centre room 236, university of guelph, guelph, ontario n1g 2w1.
Our telephone number is (519) 824-4120 X 8522.

Peak Criteria
The Peak is a forum for free expression. Once a submission is accepted, it will not be modified in any way beyond proofreading without the author's consent. We will not print material that is oppressive, for example ableist, homophobic, racist, or sexist, or that supports any other form of domination of one group of people over another.
