On 8 April the Chinese state media (Xinhua) reported that two Tibetans, Lobsang Gyaltsen and Loyak, had been sentenced to death in connection with the violence in Tibet’s capital on 14 March last year. Recent trials of Tibetans for their alleged roles in last year’s protests have been conducted in secrecy and in the absence of even the most basic level of legal oversight and due process. Last month Human Rights Watch revealed a judicial system so highly politicised as to preclude any possibility of fair trials for Tibetans. 1. Contacting the Prime Minister by mail, fax or email at: Rt. Hon. Stephen Harper Fax: 613-941-6900 EMail: p...@pm.gc.ca 2. Contacting Canada’s Minister of Foreign Affairs by mail, phone, fax or email at: Hon. Lawrence Cannon Telephone: (613) 992-5516 3. Call or write your Member of Parliament. You can find your MP here: http://webinfo.parl.gc.ca/MembersOfParliament/MainMPsCompleteList.aspx?T... • To publicly and privately call on the Chinese authorities to reverse the death sentences passed on Lobsang Gyaltsen, Loyak, Tenzin Phuntsog and Gangtsu. It is imperative this is undertaken promptly as their execution could be carried out in weeks. • To secure guarantees that all trials of Tibetans are held in open court, with legal safeguards met, and that consular staff and foreign journalists be allowed to attend such court proceedings, where requested. • To request the publication of a full list of the names and locations of all Tibetans still in detention after last year’s protests.
