The youngest member of the Afghan parliament, Malalai Joya, 29, attracted international attention when she condemned the presence of warlords and drug lords in government during a meeting of the Loya Jirga, the national assembly, in 2003. Despite threats of assassination and rape, Joya continues to speak for women's rights, but was suspended from parliament on May 21, 2007.
