Russian Duma, Ukrainian Parliament Condemn

Anonyme, Lunes, Noviembre 6, 2006 - 15:23

MOSCOW, November 3.— The Russian Duma (lower house of Parliament) condemned Friday, with a unanimous vote of all 436 deputies, the US economic blockade against Cuba and called on the parliaments of the world to join the international demand for its end.

Presenting the document, Parliamentarian Serguei Baburin noted that in 2001, during their meeting in Havana, presidents Vladimir Putin and Fidel Castro defended equality for all states and respect for their sovereignty.

Visiting Cuban Parliament's president, Ricardo Alarcón, expressed gratitude on behalf of the Cuban legislature and people for what he called "a fine gesture of solidarity by the Duma with its unanimous vote."

The leader of the communist group in the Russian Parliament, Guennadi Ziuganov, for his part, said that the plenary session, with its unanimous vote to applause and cheers, had been unprecedented. He said over the last few years no guest speaker from a foreign parliament had addressed the Duma as Alarcon had.
