Local group joins with international simultaneous readings of Irwin Shaw's Bury the Dead

Soldiers killed in action to return from the dead to demand explanations from US Government

On Monday September 19, Montreal will join with anti-war and theatre groups all over the world in staging readings of Irwin Shaw's play Bury the Dead as a collaborative protest against the occupation in Iraq . Bury The Dead is a play about the brutality of war and six dead soldiers' refusal to be buried so that the truth of that horror will not be buried with them. With the death toll in Iraq rising every day, the play's subject is relevant to today. September 19th will see simultaneous readings of the play in many cities across North America, including Toronto, New York, Buffalo , San Francisco, Kitchener/Waterloo and Montréal. In each city funds raised will go towards building a local anti-war organization. In the Montreal case, the money will be sent to the War Resisters Support Campaign, an organization that is working to get status in Canada for conscientious objectors who have fled the US Army.

There will be two parts to the Montreal event: a reading and a theatrical action facilitated by the Optative Theatrical Laboratories.

Monday September 19th, 11:00am, Phillips Square

Dead US soldiers will be appearing at the US Consulate demanding to know what they died for. Inspired by characters from Shaw's play, the soldiers will assemble at Phillips Square on Ste-Catherine St. West at 11am on September 19th and march down to the US Consulate at 1155 rue St-Alexandre. The soldiers will not leave the scene until they have been given an explanation for their deaths by the Consulate authorities.
