Money vs. Morals: Can West Global offers University of Western Ontario Journalism program $1 million bursarymichael hull, Lunes, Marzo 28, 2005 - 23:55

Today a huge debate took place at the University of Western discussing a possible bursary from Can West Global. Can West is offering our journalism program $1 million in aid for "minimal catches"; from what I gathered at the debate that the 'minimal' involvement only includes: certain guest speakers; and minimal course content. I personally don't think it is that simple, I understand that $1 million might not be a lot of money to Canada's biggest media conglomerate, but I'm sure the "minimal catches" as discussed at the debate by our FIMS (Faculty of Information Media Studies) representative will be part of some sort of Can West agenda. One of Western's best media professors gave a brief presentation on why accepting this bursary would compromise the falculty's principals (due to Can West's history of strong editorial censorship and conglomeration), while the journalism students (that spoke 4-5) were in support of accepting this bursary due to the practical financial aid it would help them. Other then the professor most people that spoke (journalism students and media undergrads) were in support of accepting the bursary. As a third year media student at Western I personally feel that the Western faculty wants the money (and will probably take it), but does need the money. HOW DO YOU THINK THIS BURSARY WOULD AFFECT THE ACADEMIC INTEGRITY OF JOURNALISM AT WESTERN?? |
