200 peaceful individuals were arrested this morning in the Green Zone on St-Laurent boulevard....

200 peaceful individuals were arrested this morning in the Green Zone on St-Laurent boulevard at approximately 9:30, necxt to the Alternative bookstore. The charges were mostly of unlawful assembly. Some were apparently also charged with participating in a riot, as were several participants in a largely peacuful demonstration of two 'snake-marches' at around 8 am.

The police, including some from the riot squad, have now (10:30) blockaded St-Laurent boulevard between de Maisoneuve and Sherbrooke streets, and between Clarke and St-Dominique along Ontario. They are quietly asking padestrians to remain on the sidewalk, and preventing even merchants from entering the blockaded area.

The Alternative bookstore, which has been broadcasting live and pre-recorded coverage of the activities surrounding the visit to Montreal of World Trade Organization delegates, is still broadcasting, even though It has been taped off by police. (It can be tuned into at http://rock-the-wto-radio.taktic.org )

Various activities were being planned for the day, including a festive party for some of the demonstrators, including hundreds who have come from out of town to help show their displeasure with WTO policies.

The individuals arrested also apparently include some first-nations artists from British Columbia who were finalizing a large mural about the murder of 60 largely indigenous women in that province.

No injuries to demonstrators have been confirmed, and the situation surrounding all borders to the blockaded area is peaceful and orderly.
