reconnaissance du Génocide Arménien"

DAVID BARSAMIAN À MONTRÉAL DU 24 AU 29 AVRIL 2003

David Barsamian, fondateur et directeur de la Radio Alternative, à Boulder, Colorado, et une des voix dissidentes et marquantes aux Etats-Unis, sera à Montréal du 24 au 29 avril 2003. La Radio Alternative www.alternativeradio.org - est une émission radiophonique hebdomadaire indépendante, avec prix de distinction, établie à Boulder, Colorado, qui présente des nouvelles et des points de vue qui sont ignorés ou déformés dans les média surveillés par les grandes corporations. Le programme d'une heure est diffusé par plus de 125 stations radiophoniques publiques à travers le monde. Tout récemment, l'Union des Libertés Civiles Américaines a décerné à Monsieur Barsamian le Prix Upton Sinclair. La série d'ouvrages qu'il a publiés avec Chomsky, le chef de file des dissidents aux Etats-Unis, sont vendus par centaines de milliers d'exemplaires et traduits en plusieurs langues.

M. Barsamian est invité par le Comité conjoint pour la Commémoration du 88e Anniversaire du Génocide Arménien, pour participer à la 4e série de conférences annuelles des Conférenciers Distingués, sur le thème du génocide. L'UGAB (L'Union Générale Arménienne de Bienfaisance - www.ugab.org), une des principales organisations de la communauté arménienne et un des membres de ce Comité conjoint, est le principal organisateur de cette activité. Cette année, le thème de la conférence est: "L'impact des média sur les efforts de reconnaissance du Génocide Arménien". A cet événement, Monsieur Barsamian sera accompagné de Madame Eleni Bakopanos, députée, vice présidente-adjointe de la Chambre des Communes du Canada, qui présentera la vision d'un législateur du parti politique en vigueur. Cette série de conférences aura lieu à la Salle Gundjian, à l'Ecole Armen Québec de l'UGAB située au 755 rue Manoogian, Ville St. Laurent, le lundi 28 avril à 19 heures. L'entrée est libre et ouverte au public.

M. Barsamian aura plusieurs entrevues dans les média le vendredi 25 avril 2003, notamment sur les ondes de CKUT; le samedi 26 avril, à 15 heures, la Librairie Paragraphe (située au 2220 McGill College, coin Sherbrooke) sera l'hôte du lancement de deux de ses livres récemment publiés "Propaganda & the Public Mind: Conversations with Noam Chomsky" et "The Decline and Fall of Public Broadcasting".

Le mardi 29 avril 2003 à 20 heures, M. Barsamian présentera une conférence publique, organisée en collaboration avec l'Association des étudiants de Concordia au Pavillon Hall, H-110 (1455 de Maisonneuve ouest), sur le thème de la situation actuelle sur la scène mondiale et le rôle des média, "Independent Media in the Time of War".

Pendant son séjour à Montréal, M. Barsamian rencontrera des représentants de différents ONG.

TOPIC: "The impact of media on recognition
efforts of the Armenian Genocide"

David Barsamian, the founding director of Alternative Radio, in Boulder Colorado and one of the leading dissident voices in the United States, will be visiting Montreal from April 24th to April 29th, 2003. Alternative Radio - www.alternativeradio.org - is an independent, award-winning, weekly radio program produced in Boulder, Colorado. AR presents information and perspectives that are ignored or distorted in the US corporate-controlled media. The one-hour program is broadcast on more than 125 public radio stations around the world. Most recently, Mr. Barsamian was awarded the Upton Sinclair Award by the American Civil Liberties Union. His series of books with Chomsky, America's leading dissident, have sold in the hundreds of thousands and have been translated into many languages.

Mr. Barsamian is invited by the Joint Committee for the Commemoration of the 88th Anniversary of the Armenian Genocide, to participate in the 4th annual Distinguished Speaker series lecture, on the topic of genocide. The AGBU (Armenian General Benevolent Union - www.agbu.org), a leading Aremenian community organization and a member organization of the committee, is the main organizer of this annual event This year's lecture topic is "The impact of media on recognition efforts of the Armenian Genocide". Mr. Barsamian will be joined at this event by Ms. Eleni Bakopanos, MP, Assistant Deputy Speaker of the House of Commons of Canada, who will be presenting the perspective of a senior lawmaker of the governing political party. The Distinguished Speaker series lecture will be held in the Gundjian Hall of the AGBU Armen Quebec School at 755 Manoogian Street in Ville St. Laurent, on Monday the 28th of April at 7:00 p.m. Attendance is free and open to the public.

David Barsamian will be conducting various media interviews on Friday the 25th of April, 2003, most notably with CKUT radio. On Saturday, the 26th of April, Paragraphe Bookstore (2220 McGill College Ave., corner of Sherbrooke street) will be hosting a book signing event at 3:00 p.m. Two of David's latest books Propaganda & the Public Mind: Conversations with Noam Chomsky and The Decline and Fall of Public Broadcasting will be featured.

On Tuesday, the 29th of April, 2003, at 8:00 p.m. Barsamian will be speaking at a free public lecture event organized in collaboration with the Concordia Student Union in the Auditorium of the Hall Building, H-110 (1455 de Maisonneuve W.) on the topic of the current situation on the world scene and the role of the media, entitled "Independent Media in the Time of War".

During his stay in Montreal, Mr. Barsamian will also be meeting with various NGOs and their representatives.
