CLAClogement
The Anti-Capitalist Convergence (CLAC) has been battling the gentrification of Montreal¹s St. Henri neighborhood in conjunction with a coalition of neighborhood organizations, groups & residents. The campaign has involved direct action, popular education and public pressure. The main target of CLAC¹s anti-poverty & anti-gentrification campaign is the Quai des Eclusiers, a massive construction project that is in the process of turning an abandoned St. Henri factory into 450 luxury condos. Historically, St. Henri is a low-income neighborhood with 75% of residents who are renters, and an average family income of $19,000. Meanwhile condos at the Quai des Eclusiers sell for up to half-a-million dollars. The Quai des Eclusiers is a gentrification project sanctioned by Montreal¹s city councillors who are doing the bidding of wealthy developers. Clearly the Quai des Eclusiers and other so-called ³development² projects will change the face of St. Henri, attempting to create a playground for the rich. The Quai des Eclusiers will cause the rents in St. Henri rise, worsening to Montreal¹s housing crisis, that saw hundreds of Montreal families on the streets this year. Over the coming weeks CLAC is planning a series of actions outside the offices of the Quai des Eclusiers, which will involve a coalition of St.Henri activists, artists and community members who will mount a constant presence outside the condo sales offices.
