In mid-July of this year a news item was circulated on the internet about two minors who were hanged in the Iranian city of Mashhad for having had homosexual relations. When, after some weeks, a more reliable version of the events was available demonstrating that Mahmoud Asgari and Ayaz Marhoni, both above the age of 18, had been sentenced for the rape of a boy younger than themselves, many demonstrations had already been called for at Iranian embassies in various cities, and the Islamophobic ire of certain gay and lesbian groups had already been let loose.

Ce sont vraiment des jours étranges lorsqu’une ONG progressiste se retrouve du même côté de la barrière que Roger Noriega, le diplomate états-unien connu pour avoir organisé l’armée Contra qui a terrorisé le Nicaragua tout au long des années 80. Pourtant, c’est exactement le cas d’Alternatives, une « organisation non gouvernementale de solidarité » du Québec dont le but est de promouvoir la « démocratie » et « la justice socio-économique et l’égalité ».

Yet this is precisely the case with Alternatives, a Quebec-based "non-governmental international solidarity organization" dedicated to promoting "democracy" and "socio-economic justice and equality". Its mandate and prominent contributors, including Naomi Klein and Judy Rebick, would normally put such a group at odds with Noriega. Not so, reveals the July edition of Le Journal Alternatives, a publication inserted once per month in Montreal's daily Le Devoir with the express purpose of "creating a window of alternative information on our world".
