Benefit Concert to support education of Karen People within Burma

Anonyme, Tuesday, October 29, 2002 - 13:56

Olivier Girard

Thursday November 7th, 8h30 PM
Petit Cafe Campus
organised by the Free Burma Coalition of McGill University

For over half a century, civil war in Burma has uprooted many of its communities. The Burmese Military regime has pursued a policy of terror towards the "Ethnic" groups living in the border areas, in order to establish total control of the territory. The results for the Karen, one of the many peoples living in Burma, has been that over 90000 of them have sought refuge in Thailand, and more than 100000 are internally displaced within Burma. International efforts have concentrated on supporting the refugees, especially at the Thai-Burma border, but little has been done to support the peoples living under threat in their homelands. The education of children especially suffers from this conflict, and will cause long-term impacts on these communities if the young generation doesn't have the tools needed to manage and organize their society.

This concert features three local bands, Throwback, Dr. Tom's Leather and Andre, which will provide an eclectic blend of rock, country, ska, reggae, and fun for all. Tickets: 6$ at the door
