At approximately 9am the riot squad entered the Centre Prefontaine squat and started a violent eviction of the remaining inhabitants. After 5 or 6 people were beaten and arrested, the squatters sought refuge at Cegep Maisonneuve. An offer of sanctuary at the Comission scolaire across the street from the Cegep reached the ears of the cops who are clearing out the building.According to their lawyer, 10 people are confirmed as being held at the Centre de Detention de L'Est, at the corner of Jean-Talon and Langelier -- anyone who can make it there to show solidarity would be very welcome. One person is confirmed as being hospitalized -- there are reports of more hospitalizations as yet unconfirmed. The lawyer also confirmed that a taser was used on at least one person -- the victim subsequently lost consciousness. THERE IS A SOLIDARITY RALLY CALLED FOR TOMORROW [THURSDAY OCT 4] AT 3PM AT CARRE BERRI (METRO BERRI-UQAM). It is essential that we condemn both the evicition and the excessive force with which it was carried out, and show our support for the squatters. Mayor Bourque explicitly stated that the squatters were evicted because they kept challenging the system and neo-liberal globalization.
