On Monday April 23 at noon in Halifax, Nova Scotia, 80 people gathered in a vigil in solidarity with the protestors imprisoned at Orsainville and elsewhere, and to plan daily events until the prisoners are released. The group gathered downtown in the Parade Square in front of city hall. We started by receiving updates on the situations of those of us who were still in Quebec City due to having been arrested. We continued by sharing testimonials about police brutality we had observed or experienced in Quebec City. In total two men and three women from Halifax and Nova Scotia have been among those arrested for peacefully demonstrating. One woman was arrested while kneeling with hands raised in the peace sign. A man and a woman were arrested for sitting peacefully in a cloud of tear gas. One woman remains in prison. After some discussion there was a minute of silence and then a march to the legislature, accompanied by singing and chants of "Free the prisoners, not free trade" and "One, we are the people, two, we have the power, three, we want justice for our people, one..." The Halifax group, Halifax Mobilization for Global Justice, is planning daily protests and vigils until all of the political prisoners in Quebec City are released. The group is lending its voice to calls for the immediate release of all the prisoners, with no charges; a condemnation of the police brutality; and to stop the FTAA. The next event is Tuesday, April 24 at 3:30 pm and every day thereafter. For information call (902)454-8781 or email benoit@kayhay.com; or jeff...@hotmail.com. |
