Abstract Expression Frees San Diego Freeways

Interstate-5 has been adorned with colorful paints, apparently dropped from a moving vehicle in thin membranes, making this notorious stretch of highway look more like a Jackson Pollock painting than a stress-and-death-inducing avenue. It is unclear whether the street artist was protesting the FTAA, especially since other sections of San Diego freeways have been painted in this way before. However, as the I-5 stretches from Mexico to Canada, this art is a remarkable metaphor of the anti-corporate-globalization movement: the road has been transformed from a nondescript, linear route from point A to point B into a display of abstract expression that reflects the color that emerges when different cultures flourish in harmony.
