Time to target the corporate media at these mass protests!vieuxcmaq, Thursday, March 1, 2001 - 12:00
warcry Target the media! (warcry@chickmail.com)
Let's take advantage of the fact that the mainstream media is present at these protests. Let's make them a target and ASSERT our agenda! It's not a surprise to us that the Zapatista march is being ignored by the US media. Seattle/WTO was covered because it happenced in front of live cameras, it was a first, and it caught them off guard. Since then, the mainstrem media strategy has been to IGNORE protests. As we all know - the core of the problem is that the FCC leases out the airwaves to the corporations. These airwaves belong to the AMERICAN PEOPLE - small detail. All the alternative media outlets including the IMC which you're using right now, are VITAL - to making our movements VISIBLE and voicing our concerns, but as impressive as alternative media is, it is not a substitute for the ATTACK we must launch on the STRANGLEHOLD the mainstream media has on the voices of dissent in this country. Alternative media, vital as its function is, it does not compete with the powerful networks. It's utterly shameful for a so called "democracy". At least in Stalinist Russia, you knew what you were getting in terms of news, but here, people have illusions, dangerous illusions, about a representative and responsible media. As most of us know - the media abuses this public trust, and is the MAJOR IMPEDIMENT to having an actual democracy. The media is the reason this fascist chimp got elected in the first place. "Free Speech" - a sacred concept to most Americans, is essentially made meaningless when a HANDFULL OF BILLIONARES have true access to reaching the mass of the American public, which our alternative media cannot do. We need to reach that public if we ever hope to make progress on our issues. Truth - is the casualty here. We're talking about a media that deliberately cheerleads the most murderous policies of State and the most destructive corporate agenda. Don't forget that T.V is a recent invention - I don't think everyone realizes the truly dangerous and central role it plays in stifling democratic communications in this country. Thomas Jefferson said democracy was impossible without a "free and open" press and I don't think he meant free as in free enterprise system. I think he meant free as in accessible and representative to the public. Its up to us to re-claim our airwaves even as we attempt to re-claim our democracy at these protests and in our lifetimes. Let's try to take advantage of the corporate media's presence at these protests like in QUEBEC CITY during FTAA - to assert our point of views - FORCEFULLY. We will be planning media centered actions! It seems more productive than fighting the cops. Anyone interested in organizing such an action is encouraged to e-mail me. We won't discuss anything illegal - just ideas. |
