Become a journalist for the CMAQ

Between April 20-22, Quebec City will host the Summit of the Americas where 34 heads of state will meet and greet to discuss the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA).

Created in October 2000, The Centre for Media Alternatives - Quebec 2001 (CMAQ) aims to be the common platform for community, alternative, and student media to provide and find independent information on the FTAA, globalisation, popular mobilisation and the activities surrounding Quebec City 2001.

In order to not only maximise the impact of our coverage, but also to make it as inclusive as possible, the CMAQ is offering journalism workshops in Montreal and Quebec City. Anybody who want to work on their journalism skills, that is to say anybody who the capacity to observe and share their experiences, is more than welcome to attend any or all of the different sessions: putting material on-line, computer editing and graphic design, audio and video, etc.).

With these workshops we hope to furnish activists with basic journalism skills and at the same time recruit print, audio, photo and video teams for the CMAQ.

Workshop Schedule:

Quebec City

* February 17 – WEB (putting material on-line and editing)
* February 24 – PRINT
* March 3 – Images (pictures and video)
* March 10 – Sound

The workshops start at 9:30 and each one will contain a brief introduction to globalisation

Please RSVP as soon as possible - Space is limited. All workshops are free, however a voluntary contribution would be appreciated to help defray the costs.

Part 1 (90 minutes)

* The medium - What is the CMAQ – the collectives, the working groups, how to upload material
* The message - What is the FTAA and Free Trade
* The sources - Who are the different groups involved in Quebec City 2001 – what are their goals and objectives?

Part 2 (90 minutes)

* How to write an article
* How to cover an event
* How to conduct an interview
* How to write a press release
* Creation of working groups and assignments

English workshop: Thursday March 1, 6pm
French workshop: Saturday March 3, 1pm

Location is: 1710 Beaudry (Metro Beaudry) room 3.2.

More workshops are planned depending on interest and needs.
