March 10 is symbolically recognized by Tibetans as the anniversary of the day Tibet was lost to China in 1959. On March 10, 1959, thousands of Tibetans revolted against the Chinese administration as a result of the oppression and systematic brutality they were experiencing under the Chinese military occupation. As a result of the popular uprising, crushed by the Chinese military, thousands were killed and many thousands more forced into Chinese labour camps. It was during this uprising that His Holiness the Dalai Lama and fellow Tibetans escaped into exile where they have worked tirelessly since to reach common ground with the Government of China.
