This summer, Rainforest Action Network and ForestEthics will select a team of individuals interested in learning to live, organize, and take non-violent direct action with the community of Grassy Narrows and help them pressure Weyerhaeuser and Abitibi Consolidated to indefinitely and immediately halt logging in their territory until the community has decided amongst themselves how they want to manage their land. We seek dedicated activists, writers, photographers and videographers with a commitment to social and ecological justice.

Intern with Rainforest Action Network and ForestEthics

On December 2nd, 2002 the Indigenous youth of the Grassy Narrows First Nation lay down in the path of industrial logging machines, preventing them from entering their traditional homeland, and sparking the longest standing Indigenous logging blockade in Canadian history. The community has asked our organizations to campaign in solidarity with them to pressure Weyerhaeuser and Abitibi Consolidated, two multinational logging companies, to respect Grassy Narrows’ rights and halt logging in their territory - giving the Grassy Narrows community control of their Traditional Territory.

This Summer, Rainforest Action Network and ForestEthics will select a team of individuals interested in learning to live, organize, and take non-violent direct action with the community of Grassy Narrows.

We seek dedicated activists, writers, photographers, videographers, and techies with a commitment to social and ecological justice. You will make an investment in your skills, participate in regular trainings and gain experience in grassroots organizing, media, and non-violent civil disobedience and campaign strategy. You will learn about the Boreal Forest, indigenous rights issues and traditional knowledge while taking action for a just and sustainable future.

In addition to a great summer of education and action, interns are encouraged to organize within their own communities to help build the network working for indigenous rights and forest defense in Ontario.

Earth Justice Action Summer is a unique opportunity to meet new people who share your values, support and learn from a First Nations community resisting industrial development and trying to develop a forward looking development paradigm in their traditional territory. The skills and experience you gain will help you to organize in your own community, and provide valuable skills and experience for possible employment in the public interest sector.

Timeline:
May 5-8 Forest Defense and Indigenous Solidarity Training and Gathering in Southern Ontario

May 29 – August 4. Interns will be expected live and work with the group at the campsite.

Passionate, motivated, smart, bold, visionary, strategic, savvy individuals committed to protecting the environment and indigenous rights.

Up to Four bursaries of $1200, and transportation subsidies, are available for those who are in need of assistance.
