L'enquête sur cautionnement de Jaggi Singh se déroule ce matin à Toronto
Des militants dénoncent la criminalisation de la dissidence

Montréal/Toronto, le 12 juillet – Le militant et organisateur communautaire Jaggi Singh sera en cour à Toronto aujourd'hui pour son enquête sur remise en liberté sous caution. Il fait face à des accusations exagérées découlant de sa participation à la mobilisation contre le G8/G20. Jaggi est derrière les barreaux depuis près d'une semaine. Il s'est rendu à la police de Toronto mardi suite à l'émission d'un mandat d'arrêt contre lui.

While G20 leaders met behind a steel cage and a 1-billion dollar Fortress Toronto operation, we witnessed an unprecedented coordinated police operation in the city of Toronto. Police brutality against protest participants, journalists, legal observers, medics, and random passersby came in the form of indiscriminate arrests, beatings, pepper spray, rubber bullets, police horse charges, illegal searches and seizures, and extended arbitrary detentions. While in custody, people were forced into steel cage cells with up to 40 people per cell; made to sleep on concrete floors with open bathrooms; denied food, water, toilet paper, and sanitary products; subjected to sexual harassment, threats, humiliation, and intimidation; and refused access to medical attention, phone calls, and legal counsel.

Pendant que les chefs d'état du G20 se rencontraient, protégés par une clôture d'acier et un plan « Toronto Forteresse » qui a couté un milliard, nous avons été témoins d'une opération policière sans précédent dans la ville de Toronto. ManifestantEs, journalistes, observateurs/trices légaux, équipes médicales et simples passantEs ont été victimes de brutalité policière; arrestations abusives, coups et blessures, poivre de Cayenne, balles de caoutchouc, fouilles et saisies illégales, charges à cheval et détentions arbitraires prolongées.

06/07/10: Une Banque Laurentienne a été attaqueé au milieu de la nuit. Les machines et les fenêtres on été détruits avec un marteau et des roches. Nous avons aussi essayé de détruire une de leurs cameras avec de la peinture. Les mots "Solidarité avec les arrêtés du G20" ont été écrit sur le mur du banque.

06/07/10: A Laurentian Bank was attacked in the middle of the night. The atms, windows and sign were smashed with a hammer and rocks. An attempt was also made to obscure one of their cameras with paint bombs. The words "Solidarity with the G20 arrestees" were painted on the bank`s wall.

The actions of the government and the police during the G20 Summit demonstrate the need for answers, accountability, and action. The Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA) is calling for:

1) An independent inquiry into the actions of the police during the G20, including: [follow the link to read the complete version]

2) Repeal or amendment of the Public Works Protection Act to meet basic constitutional standards; and

3) Law reform to ensure that the Criminal Code provisions relating to “breach of the peace”, “unlawful assemblies” and “riots” are brought in line with constitutional standards.
