The Iraqi people took another wrenching leap deeper into the hell of U.S. occupation in the early morning of February 22. A group of men dressed in police uniforms set off bombs that destroyed the golden dome of the Askariya shrine in Samarra, one of the most important mosques for Shi’a Islam. The reactionary attack on Askariya in turn triggered more reactionary violence aimed at the mosques, political parties, and ordinary people associated with Sunni Islam, the main rival trend to Shi’a.

The 13 February, the tenth anniversary of the people’s war in Nepal, was marked by military actions, a mass support rally in New Delhi, India, and a series of interviews given by Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) Chairman Prachanda to the Nepali, Indian and world media. Chairman Prachanda’s comment on the king’s future – or lack of one – caused a huge stir because friends and foe alike knew that it was not only a statement of intent backed by millions of people in revolt and a rapidly advancing revolutionary army, but part of a specific plan and timetable.

Hundreds of Dominican activists have reportedly held a series of demonstrations recently to protest the presence of 800 US soldiers in Barahona, capital of the southwestern province of Barahona. In one protest, apparently on Feb. 14, demonstrators gathered in the city's central park and then marched to the encampment where the US soldiers are staying. Dominican soldiers guarding the site pointed their rifles at the protesters, who later burned an effigy of Uncle Sam. The protest was organized by a coalition, the Bolivarian Continental Coordinating Committee.
