As politicians jousted and journalists' cameras flashed on Parliament Hill and the pathetic spectacle of the "Leader of the Opposition" Stéphane Dion found new cause to embrace his Conservative "opponents," the budget passed last Tuesday by Finance Minister Jim Flaherty was anything but spectacular. As usual, it's up to the government to help the Canadian capitalists increase profits, while strengthening the repressive functions of the State apparatus.

Over two years ago, on February 28th 2006, the first tents were erected in a construction site in a small town called Caledonia. From that day onwards, local Natives, upset at plans by Henco Industries to build on their land, have faced institutionalized discrimination from the government, public discrimination from their fellow Canadians, and attacks, verbal and physical, from both police and white supremacists -- and yet, they're still there.

As we've come to expect, the two political wings of the Canadian bourgeoisie (the Liberals and Conservatives) have agreed recently on a proposal, which will soon be passed to the House of Commons, to extend the military occupation operations of the Canadian Forces in Afghanistan to at least 2011. Since the release of the Manley Report at the end of January, it became clear that the position of the bourgeoisie in Canada was firmly in support of maintaining Canada's role in the imperialist occupation of Afghanistan.

Throughout the last few weeks, important developments have arisen in Nepal and other parts of South Asia. The elections to form the Constituent Assembly, which aims to abolish the reactionary monarchy in accordance with the agreement between the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) and the Seven-Party Alliance (SPA), is fast approaching, scheduled for the 10th of April. But some SPA members are conspiring with imperialist and external forces in order to prevent the victory of the people's revolution.
