SEPTEMBER 29TH PROTEST ORGANIZERS WILL ANNOUNCE MAJOR LAWSUIT AGAINST WASHINGTON, DC POLICE AT
PRESS CONFERENCE. The DC police decision to turn DC into a war-zone constitutes a major assault on free speech rights and will be the subject of major litigation that will be filed in Federal Court in the coming days by the Partnership for Civil Justice on behalf of the International Action Center, the Latin American Solidarity Conference, and others.

MONDAY, AUGUST 13, 2 P.M., NATIONAL PRESS CLUB, MURROW ROOM, 13TH FLOOR, 529 14TH STREET, NW

"IMF/WORLD BANK ATTEMPTS TO FLEE FROM THE VOICE OF THE PEOPLE"

The announcement that the IMF and World Bank are
"consolidating" their annual meeting to just two days - September 29 and 30, 2001 - is a clear sign of the growing strength of the worldwide movement against corporate globalization, say organizers of the September 29th demonstrations in Washington DC.

The September 29th protests, organized by the Latin American Solidarity Conference and the International Action Center, are focused on opposition to the IMF and World Bank, against the domestic and foreign policies of George Bush, and in opposition to U.S. intervention in Latin America.

Protests the following day, on Sept. 30th organized by the Mobilization for Global Justice, the Anti-Capitalist Convergence and others as part of Global Justice Week, will focus on
opposition to the IMF and World Bank.

Representatives of the IMF/World Bank, G8, WTO, and the FTAA cannot meet anywhere in the world without being challenged by tens of thousands of militant demonstrators who have exposed these agencies for imposing poverty, hunger, and unemployment on working people throughout the world.

**In Quebec, in Gothenburg, in Genoa the
representatives of the corporate and banking elite, including George W. Bush, are able to hold their strategy sessions only behind heavily fortified exclusion zones that are designed to silence the voices of those who stand for justice; said Cherrene Horazuk, of the Committee in Solidarity with the People of El Salvador.

**Democratic freedoms are being routinely suspended in order to isolate policy makers from the voice of the people.

**Police raids on offices; the use of police
provocateurs and infiltrators, the mass preventive
detention arrests, the use of rubber bullets, tear
gas, pepper spray, and now live ammunition - these
have become the ever-present instruments of
state-sponsored terrorism against the people; said
Brian Becker of the International Action Center.

**The Washington, DC police and other authorities,
after spending weeks demonizing demonstrators in the mass media, have now announced that they are closing off vast sections of Washington DC on September 29 and 30 with six-foot-high fencing and
jersey barriers; and deploying thousands of heavily-armed police; said Mara Verheyden-Hilliard of the Partnership for Civil Justice.

**This zone will be used to try to insulate
the IMF/World Bank delegates from the voices of
dissent.

**The protest organizers are asserting that the police have no right to turn large areas of the
Capital into the private property of the IMF and World Bank.

This police decision constitutes a major assault on free speech rights and will be the subject of major litigation that will be filed in Federal Court in the coming days by the Partnership for Civil Justice on behalf of the International Action Center, the Latin American Solidarity Conference, and others.

These two organizations had earlier filed for permits to hold demonstrations on September 29th.
