when public assembly stops being public cuz the public has something to say.... Quebec City, may 22nd. A protest took place in Quebec City today, May 22nd in order to obtain the liberation of political prisonners from direct action group Germinal and other that have been arrested during the "summit of the hypocrits" and also to obtain justification about the overuse of gas and plastic bullets during that same summit. The first one in front of the court house had only a few 50 people (including those from montreal (i think they were 38)) and we had probably as many pigs and mass media shit than we had protester. It stayed quiet. The second one was at 17:30 where we already met a few pigs. The pig's leader came in to ask what was the itinerary we planned to follow, then we said that we had no leader (we really didn't have any since that we were all from different groups) so he headed to the one who was holding the microphone. Then everyone gathered around the cop and he got a bit nervous cuz lots of us were masked. He then asked again what was the itinerary in order to "protect" the peaceful walkers.... the answer was :"you'll see by yourself" followed by a few bad words. He left. The march finally got started with all the mass media filming masked people (who cares 'bout people that looks peaceful?). We headed to the city hall where was a "public" assembly to ask for the liberation of all political prisonners and to get justification for the abuses that cops made during the summit. we finnally reached the city hall and tried to enter. Then two patrol cops were holding the door handle. A few masked guys, which i was part of, approached the door and attempted to open the door. even though cops was holding it we did open it by force (without breaking anything). The two patrol cops ran behind the next door. Once again we did open it successfully so we then headed to the room where was the "public" assembly where another cops was waiting in front of the door helping us from entering in the room so we gathered there (a few people stayed downstairs because it wasn't wide enough) and we started making noise to make the people inside the room know that WE had something to say and we were gonna say it. after 20 minutes of noise someone got out of the stairs and told us that riot cops were downstairs blocking the only exit. they rapidly got on the second floor saying that they would arrest us all because we were occupying illegally the place (which is supposed to be public). The pig's leader got their too trying to discuss with us and saying that they were nice and peaceful, even though they had their night stick not far from their hand. The pig's leader discussed a bit with the cop who was already there and he entered the room to talk with the mayor and the assembly. We were waiting quiet. He finally got out and told us that the mayor was ok to hear us but there was not enough room inside for us so we had to choose a representative which was kinda hard because we were people from a lot of different groups. We argued and he got back in the room. He finally got back with a guy from the mayor's office that knew nothing at all about the subject and we had to ask him the question and he would bring hem to the next assembly which is two weeks later. we once again stood up protesting that a public assembly shoud NOT stop being public if the public have something to say. people were getting angry, cops were getting nervous. The fact that we were surrouded by riot cops was kinda making us angrier. finally we resigned to ask our question to the mayor's freak knowing that we would not have answers from them and nobody was prepared for an occupation of the place. during all this we were being filmed by another pig with his camera filming people's face in order to catch us later as they usually do in quebec city. we left the place angry and were welcomed by a crowd that was bigger than when we entered. we stood outside yelling slogans and having little teach-ins while the cops were locking all the building's exit. half an hour later we started to walk in direction of downtown where we had McDonald's, GAP, and Coca-Cola cars which was hard to resist to not hit hem (i didnt resist the Coca-cola car, sorry). The protest ended peacefully without any arrest but we learned what we already knew, democracy is still an utopia and justice does not exist for all in quebec city, money leads quebec's "justice". we learned that a public assembly stops being public when the public has something to say!!!!! n.b. : sorry if i made a few mistakes but my first language is french so... |
