This is a brief addition to my earlier article about what I saw in Quebec. I felt I needed to clarify my points on the Black Bloc, and restate my emotions on the topic.

Dear Fellow activists:
My letter about what I saw in Quebec has fueled a lot of
response in my email box, and there is something I would like
to comment on.

In one of my final paragraphs I think I dealt an all-too-harsh and
perhaps unfair blow to the Black Bloc. Let me clear up the air
and extend my apologies.

From other eyewitness accounts emailed to me, and from
other recollections I have of the events, it seems that many
individuals who threw rocks and concrete and molotov
cocktails at the cops were actually NOT Black Bloc members.
They were not dressed in black. The actions of the Black Bloc
(as far as I can tell, and I'm by no means saying I know the
whole truth) seemed to have been restricted to tearing down
the Wall of Shame. For that I commend you.

My views on violence are this: I believe that violent action (the
kind that hurts individuals, be they police or others) are not
right. I don't want to judge, I don't want to lay any blame.
However I do want to say this: how can causing physical pain
to people accomplish a goal? By hurting even those who are
hurting us, we are only perpetuating a cycle that has been
going on for millennia. If we truly want a new world, a new
vision, a safe space for our children and grandchildren to
dance in, I believe we must use our words, our minds, our
hearts and our spirits. Let the energy loose in beautiful rather
than painful ways, and I think we will all be so much better off.
