Last Friday the university senate unanimously voted to permit students to defer final exams in order to attend demonstrations at the upcoming Free Trade Area of the Americas negotiations in Quebec City, April 20-22. The motion, put forward by student senator Patrice Blais, will allow students to defer finals provided they inform the university well ahead of time. Although there were worries about possible abuse, the senate was very supportive of the initiative. "We encourage students to have a public conscience," said Arts and Science Dean Martin Singer. "It's commendable for our students to voice their opinion." "It's twice as easy to fake a sickness," said Blais, responding to concerns that this may create a loophole for students. Student representatives including CSU executives Sabine Friesinger and Mistie Mullarkey said the March 31 deadline would serve to weed out students who just don't feel ready to take an exam. -30- |
