Alors que la campagne des élections fédérales canadiennes entre dans sa deuxième semaine, le gouvernement d’Israël a lancé une campagne pour calomnier, perturber et possiblement attaquer la prochaine Flottille de la liberté vers Gaza, qui transportera de nombreux Canadiens à bord du Bateau canadien pour Gaza. Le premier ministre israélien, Binyamin Netanyahu, menace d’« agir fermement » en ayant recours à « la force » contre la flottille en mai.

Le Bateau canadien pour Gaza fait appel à tous les partis fédéraux pour dénoncer ces menaces contre des Canadiens par Israël. Un État qui a fait la démonstration qu'il n'hésitait pas à utiliser la force meurtrière contre des civils, comme lors de l'attaque mortelle contre la flottille de la liberté l’année dernière.

« Le vœu de Netanyahu d’utiliser la force équivaut à une menace de mort contre les participants canadiens et internationaux de la flottille », déclare Wendy Goldsmith du Bateau canadien pour Gaza. « La question est, s’ils sont élus, que feront les candidats à l’élection pour veiller à la sécurité de ceux qui sont à bord du Bateau canadien pour Gaza, à la lumière des menaces de violence d’Israël ? »

Le Premier ministre Netanyahu a faussement déclaré que la Flottille est organisée par des « islamistes radicaux » déterminés à faire entrer des armes en contrebande dans Gaza par la mer. Grâce à un soutien populaire de partout au Canada, le Bateau canadien pour Gaza a ramassé plus de 80% de la somme visée de 300 000$, et bénéficie de l’appui d’organisations représentant des centaines de milliers de Canadiens.

Des politiciens fédéraux à la retraite – dont Warren Allmand et Raymond Gravel – soutiennent l’initiative, et le Bateau canadien pour Gaza fait appel aux politiciens qui cherchent à être élus à faire de même.

« En l’absence de leadership fédéral, les Canadiens se préparent à défendre les droits humains palestiniens et le droit international en brisant le siège illégal de Gaza. Nous invitons les chefs des partis fédéraux à se joindre à nous sur le bateau et à faire partie d’une solution pacifique à cette crise », affirme Ehab Lotayef du Bateau canadien pour Gaza. « Les candidats qui briguent un mandat à cette élection ont la responsabilité d'affirmer clairement qu’il serait inacceptable qu’Israël attaque le Bateau canadien pour Gaza ou tout autre navire de la prochaine flottille. »

De nombreuses personnalités publiques canadiennes et internationales ont déjà apporté leur appui au Bateau canadien pour Gaza, y compris Denis Halliday, ancien coordinateur humanitaire de l’ONU en Irak, Amir Khadir, député du Québec, Maher Arar et Monia Mazigh, les écrivaines Judy Rebick et Linda McQuaig, Noam Chomsky et Norman Finkelstein, pour n’en nommer que quelques-uns. Plus de 100 organisations de la société civile – des syndicats comme la CSN au Québec, des groupes chrétiens, musulmans et juifs, des organisations universitaires et communautaires, ainsi que des organisations non gouvernementales – ont apporté leur soutien à cette mission.

La Flottille internationale de la liberté II, qui coordonne les efforts de groupes venant du monde entier (Canada, Espagne, Suisse, Italie, Irlande, États-Unis, Royaume Uni, Grèce, Turquie, France et d’autres) prévoit de se rendre à Gaza par bateau durant la deuxième moitié de mai 2011. Le premier ministre israélien, Binyamin Netanyahu, a également demandé au Secrétaire général des Nations Unies, Ban Ki-moon, de l’aider à bloquer l’arrivée de la Flottille de la liberté à Gaza en mai. Le Secrétaire général a répondu en déclarant qu’Israël devait mettre fin au blocus de Gaza.

As the Canadian federal election campaign enters week two, the government of Israel has launched a campaign to slander, disrupt, and possibly attack the upcoming Freedom Flotilla to Gaza, which will have many Canadians aboard the Canadian Boat to Gaza. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu has now threatened to “act firmly” using “force” against the flotilla in May.

The Canadian Boat to Gaza is calling on all of the federal parties to denounce these threats against Canadians by Israel, which has demonstrated its willingness to use lethal force against civilians, similar to its fatal attack on last year’s freedom flotilla.

“Netanyahu’s vow to use force is tantamount to a death threat against the Canadian and international participants in the flotilla,” says Wendy Goldsmith of the Canadian Boat to Gaza. “The question is, if elected, what will candidates running in this election do to ensure the safety and security of those on board the Canadian Boat to Gaza, in light of Israeli threats of violence?”

Prime Minister Netanyahu has falsely claimed that the Flotilla is being organized by "radical Islamists" intent on smuggling weapons into Gaza by sea. With support from coast to coast, the Canadian Boat to Gaza has raised over 80% of its fundraising goal of $300,000, and enjoys the endorsement of organizations representing hundreds of thousands of Canadians.

Retired federal politicians – including Warren Allmand and Raymond Gravel – support the initiative, and the Canadian Boat to Gaza is calling on politicians seeking election to do the same.

“In the absence of federal leadership, Canadians are preparing to stand up for Palestinian human rights and international law by breaking the illegal siege of Gaza. We’re inviting the federal party leaders to join us on the boat and to be part of the peaceful solution to this crisis,” says Ehab Lotayef of the Canadian Boat to Gaza. “Candidates seeking office in this election have a responsibility to make it clear that it would be unacceptable for Israel to attack the Canadian Boat to Gaza or any other vessel in the upcoming flotilla.”

Many notable Canadian and international figures have already endorsed the Canadian Boat to Gaza, including Denis Halliday, former UN Humanitarian coordinator in Iraq, Amir Khadir, Quebec MLA, Maher Arar and Monia Mazigh, writers Judy Rebick and Linda McQuaig, Noam Chomsky and Norman Finkelstein, to name but a few. More than 100 civil society organizations – trade unions such as CSN in Quebec, Christian, Muslim and Jewish groups, campus and community organizations, as well as non-governmental organizations – have lent their support to the mission.

The international Freedom Flotilla II, coordinating the efforts of groups from all over the world (Canada, Spain, Switzerland, Italy, Ireland, USA, UK, Greece, Turkey, France and others) is planning to sail to Gaza in the second half of May 2011. Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu also asked UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon to help him stop the Freedom Flotilla from arriving in Gaza in May. The Secretary General responded saying that Israel should end the blockade of Gaza.
