MUMBAI - Throughout India, Ganesh - the six-armed, elephant-headed god of luck - adorns walls and places of worship in homes, businesses, restaurants and so on, bringing luck to locations in which he's displayed. Unfortunately, no one thought to bring an image of him here to the World Social Forum.

Thursday's press conference – the first of the Forum – hosted only about a hundred of the 2,000 journalists expected to cover the events of the coming days. Some of them left to make conversation over by the stale cookies and tea. The rest endured boring incantations of phrases they could have read on the internet, either in better English or their own languages. The exception was a Dalit (formerly “untouchable
