Public conference: defending native peoples' rights

Ramon Penate Diaz is a Chol campesino and human rights defender with the "Chiapas Community Defenders Network." and Carlos Chen Osorio, a survivor of the 1982 Rio Negro massacres in Guatemala will be present at Concordia U on friday the 7th of june 2002.

Ramon Penate Diaz is a Chol campesino and human rights defender with the "Chiapas Community Defenders Network." The members of this network defend indigenous people against economic and military oppression. They themselves are repeatedly harassed by paramilitary groups. He will speak on their experiences in defending indigenous rights.

Carlos Chen Osorio is a survivor of the 1982 Rio Negro massacres in Guatemala. His wife and children were among 444 villagers killed when their village was wiped out to make way for the Chixoy Dam project, funded by the World Bank and Inter-American Development Bank. Mr. Chen Osorio will speak on current efforts to seek justice for his people.

Both presentations will be in Spanish; one speaker will be translated into French and one into English. Donations to cover costs will be gratefully accepted.
