Today, Central Asia has become the staging ground for controlling the energy sources of the future as well an area of important geopolitical confrontations where the principal players are vying to fill the void left by the Soviet Union. While a fossil fuel map is being drawn by multinational corporations, we must ask ourselves if this new game isn’t outweighing the true economic and social interests in the region. Despite the promises of investment and jobs, is it reasonable to believe that pipelines will turn into a development machine for the Central Asian states? And is it possible to appease the interests of the super powers and their thirst for resources without further destabilizing the whole region?

This conference will attempt to redefine the geopolitical notion of the “new great game
