Will Bush Administration Respond to Assaults on New York and Washington with Indiscriminate Violence?

Interview by Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus.

In the wake of Sept. 11's cataclysmic events, the Bush administration has promised the public that the government is organizing massive military retaliation against the perpetrators amid vows to "root out evil" and -- in the words of Deputy Defense Secretary Paul Wolfowitz -- ending states who sponsor terrorism, a statement later retracted.

Between The Lines' Melinda Tuhus spoke with Joy Gordon, an attorney and professor of philosophy at Fairfield University in Connecticut, who specializes in the study of ethics and human rights. She discusses the potential for indiscriminate violence inherent in the Bush administration's stated intentions, the viewpoint that creates a hierarchy of value regarding human life and the recent tragedy in light of America's past history of human rights abuses RealAudio Version of this interview may be found At http://www.btlonline.org).

Joy Gordon's book on the ethics of economic sanctions against Iraq is forthcoming from Harvard University Press.
