howl collective (stefanchristoff@hotmail.com)

Howl a festival of art and revolution for 2001 will included an FTAA sound project for the 13th of october at centro social espanol. We are calling for submission before august 15th.

2ND ANNUAL HOWL FESTIVAL: CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS

FTAA SOUND PROJECT

This year's HOWL Festival will feature both a Montreal and Toronto edition, with the MONTREAL event running OCTOBER 11-13 at the Casa del Popolo & Centro Social Espanol. The first two evenings will focus on spoken word and film work, including a screening from the Toronto Video Activist Collective film about the FTAA protests last spring. We would like to follow through with an audio-specific response to the events & experiences of the QC FTAA protests on the third night, OCTOBER 13.

As a point of departure for this audio performance, we would like to gather a wide selection of field recordings and audio documents (interviews, speeches, etc.) from Quebec City, and set up a structure for the compiling, editing and 'composing' of this material by the participants. Eventual use of musical instruments, playing composed or improvised music, is to be determined by interested participants. The idea is to generate an evening of sound specifically for the HOWL event involving material from, and people who were present at, the FTAA protests. We know there were a whole lot of recording devices out there, and lots of musicians too, so we're hopeful that something real & respectful can be created from this. We expect the overall idea to develop as the sounds pile up and folks meet to listen & discuss.

We need:

1. folks interested in submitting raw audio from the summit of the americas;

2. folks interested in helping to compile, digitize, analogize, etc. this material;

3. folks interested in attending a meeting in late-august to bang around ideas about the scope/limits of the performance itself, and the logistics of its preparation;

If one or more of the above applies to you, please respond by AUGUST 15. Include any relevant info regarding FTAA protest audio in your (or someone you know's) possession, technical know-how/resources, and general availability to work on this stuff through the late summer/early fall.

THE FTAA SOUND PROJECT.
2ND ANNUAL HOWL FESTIVAL IN MONTREAL.
OCTOBER 13TH AT THE CENTRO SOCIAL ESPANOL.

PLEASE RESPOND BY AUGUST 15 2001.
