American Free Trade Agreement!

06-07-01 - Former prime minister Brian Mulroney, presently visiting New Zealand, has been told in no
uncertain terms that the New Zealand people want no part whatsoever of his neo-liberal free
trade ideologies. He is here at the invitation of the local business community and has been
meeting local politicians, businessmen and community leaders to expound the joys of NAFTA which
he is pressing this country to join.
Both of his meetings in the capital, Wellington, and New Zealand’s commercial centre, Auckland,
have been picketed by anti-globalisation activists who told it straight to the participants as
they arrived for the NZ$59 a head luncheons.
Yesterday (July 5), demonstrators picketing the meeting venue were dressed as zapatistas.
Today’s Auckland protest, organised at short notice by the Alliance & Green parties and the
local Socialist Workers Organisation, numbered about 30 who vigorously challenged the lunch
guests as they arrived at the swanky Stamford Plaza hotel - base for Bill Clinton and his
CIA minders during his APEC visit in 1999.
The well known international ocean yachtsman, Sir Peter Blake was told that NAFTA was
prejudicial to the environment, and local Waitakere Eco-city mayor, Bob Harvey was megaphoned
about the threat of NAFTA chapter 11 provisions on the regulatory abilities of his local city
council which encompasses a large scenic block of west coast forest parks, reserves and beaches
