Monday April 2 2001
The Convergence Table and the Ottawa Convergence combined forces in an act of non-violent civil disobedience to try and obtain the content of the Free Trade Area of the Americas (FTAA) documents. 400 protestors demanded an end to the secrecy surrounding the FTAA, a neo-liberal agreement based on the same principles as the North American Free Trade Agreement (NAFTA). 87 demonstrators managed to peacefully cross barriers surrounding the Ministry of external affairs and international trade building at 125 Sussex drive in order to physically obtain the documents. All of them, women and men, young and old alike, were arrested, fully aware that they would have to spend up to 24 hours in jail. Philippe Duhamel, activist, spokesperson for SalAMI, and protagonist of the civil disobedience movement since Operation SalAMI in May 1998, was among those arrested.
