National and International Campaign Against Police Brutality

- Summarised translation of a document from the Colombian University Students`Association -

In Colombia, those in power say that the police are there to protect and defend the population, but in reality they exist to support and reinforce a system of exploitation and repression. This is how police intervention is justified against all those who oppose the current system, whether they be in universities, schools, or on mass demonstrations.

In States like ours, social discontent is widespread and demonstrations calling for social rights represent an everyday means of expression for the oppressed and exploited classes. The leaders have therefore seen the necessity of taking the necessary measures to maintain the status quo. So they criminalise the demonstrations and the legitimate work of the majority of student, social, and human rights organizations.

The legitimacy of State power is sunk in a total blood bath and the Mobile Anti-Riot Squadrons (ESMAD) continue to claim victims. At their hands Carlos Giovanny Blanco, 20 years of age, was murdered on 7th November 2001; Jaime Alfonso Acosta was murdered on 20th November 2002; Nicolás Neira was murdered on 1st May 2005 aged 15; Johny Silva Aranguren was murdered on 22nd September 2005 aged 21; Belisario Camallo Guetoto was murdered on 16th November 2005 aged 16; and Oscar Salas was murdered on 8th March 2006 aged 20. The ESMAD decided to rob all of these victims of their family, their friends, their education, their freedom, and their life.

Cases denouncing this kind of aggression throughout the whole country are countless, which is increasing the outrage of various mass sectors. In this sense, we demand that those guilty of these heinous crimes are punished in an exemplary manner. We also demand the immediate disbanding of the ESMAD and of the fascist campaign of brutality against working-class sectors of society who decide to express their refusal of the authoritarian, militarist, neo-liberal and anti-working class policies of Alvaro Uribe Velez` regime.

The Colombian University Students`Association (ACEU) has therefore launched a national and international campaign for the disbanding of the ESAMD and against police brutality. The ACEU urges mass sectors of society in Colombia and the international community to mobilize against the acts of barbarism being unleashed in Colombia and across the planet.
