Joe Comartin doubles NDP Membership in Quebec

I witnessed a very interesting political happening today at Concordia University.

Joe Comartin-the francophone NDP leadership candidate, federal environment critic and Member of Parliament for Windsor-St Clair-made a speech today which resulted in several hundred people joining the NDP.

I only saw the one speech given at about 16:45 on the Seventh floor of the Hall building at Concordia. Joe had three more events scheduled with the Montreal Muslim community that evening.

Joe has recently returned from a peace mission to Iraq. Joe has been extremely outspoken against the policies of racial profiling, sanctions on Iraq and supportive of the United Nations resolutions on Palestine.
It was the discussion of these policies that motivated hundreds in the room to join the NDP to support him.

The NDP has never faired well in Quebec and before the current leadership race started there was less than 300 members of the federal political party. Now the race is seriously underway and Joe has made the links with the Muslim and anti-war communities from Coast to Coast.

These new members of the NDP may not stay for long but their presence will be felt as they make sure that International issues remain on the agenda.

Check out Joe Comartin's website or this piece from the Montreal Muslim News: www.MontrealMuslimNews.net.

Joe's website has a report back from his visit to Iraq as well his statement on peace in English, French, Spanish and Arabic.
